The name ‘Manolo Blahnik’ is instantly associated with the finest footwear on the planet, year after year decade after decade, Manuel “Manolo” Blahnik Rodriguez, has proved himself as one of the worlds most prolific shoe designers. Born in 1942 in Spain’s Canary Islands he came from a modest background but in 1972 Ossie Clark asked him to design the shoes for his show that season. It was then with just £2000 that he was able to open his own boutique. Now he has boutiques all over the world but his flagship store is still on Old Church St, Chelsea London.
The legend himself, Manolo Blahnik.
With a design career that spans almost 50 years, he’s already been honored with a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) but this week it was announced he’s to receive the very prestigious ‘British Fashion Awards 2012, Outstanding Achievement Award’, so in honour of that here’s our pick of the top 5 most iconic Manolo Blahnik heels!
Number 5. The Ankle Sequin boot, very 80’s but wouldn’t look out of place now.
Number 4. The Bella Swan Wedding Shoe. These beauty’s were worn in the wedding scene between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen from Twilight Breaking Dawn Pt1 and lets face it, it’s not everyday you see Miss.Stewart in a pair of heels!
Number 3. The Dot Boot, a design by Damian Hurst and manufactured by Manolo Blahnik. They’re currently on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and I likey!
Number 2. The Blue Satin Manolo’s, you’ll will most certainly recognise! These beautiful foot jewels were made exclusively for the Sex and the City Film, Carrie also wears them for her wedding! The price tag in the film was $525 but after the amount of exposure they received from the movie the price was soon hitched up to over $800…. of course they still sold out immediately!
Number 1. The Mary Jane. These have to be the most classic and iconic of all of his pieces, thought to be an urban myth – something which is also referenced by Carrie the SATC film when she is raiding the Vogue store room. These shoes were put into production in 1994 and had not been available since then. It was a favourite of Kate Moss amongst others but had been coveted by Manolo fans for so long they were really thought of as a myth. In 2009 they were brought back with requite and for that we salute him!
